ConvictsOn the 26th January 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip landed in Sydney Cove, and raised the British flag for the first time in Australia. With him were 751 convicts, or criminals, who were coming to Australia as punishment for the crimes they had committed in Britain.
More convict fleets continued to arrive in Australia over the next few years and were sent to work in the penal colony in New South Wales. Phillip had a system that the convicts (no matter what the crime they committed was) worked as part of their punishment where they were assigned jobs based on the skills they had. Some of these jobs included brick makers, carpenters, nurses, servants, cattlemen, shepherds, and farmers. |
